People desire to be genuine, and who they are; however, in this world today, it is so hard. When you attend school, you are taught to imitate and conform. What happened to thinkers and philosophers? I witnessed that as a teacher and struggled with the concept. Subsequently, when you get a job, the pressure is on; the company’s primary focus is to produce and make money. After a while, your mind is shaped to adapt to the capitalistic system. Your temperament begins to change. Then, in relationships, sometimes you get lost inside your friends’ or partners’ identities to appease or be loved. So the question is “To be or not to be?” Do you know who you are or what you want out of life? The first critical test is to look in the mirror. If you are pleased with how you naturally look, then that is a step forward in the right direction. Some people do not like their appearance; therefore, they try to alter their looks to emulate someone else. Many of us have gone through many transformations just to fit in. We are created in the image and likeness of God, so love the way you look because you are beautiful inside and out. The second test is exploring subjects you enjoy reading. Do not only read what is popular. Read books, magazines, or articles that can enhance your life spiritually and physically. Take an inventory regarding your favorite topics. Write them down and select your readings based on your list. Put your thinking cap on. The third test is contemplating about how music, television, films, and social media affect your outlook on life. Sometimes mass media change your perspective about existence, create confusion, and force you to compete with the noise. If most of the time, the effect is negative, tune out and tune into you. Find other ways to enhance, enrich, and engage the person that you are. The fourth test is to learn how to love unconditionally with compassion and respect for others. If we all learn how to give and accept love, our lives would be so much better. We would discover how to acknowledge our imperfections, and in return, we wish to be who we are. Lastly, laugh a lot. Be thankful. Be happy. Try to dream big. Learn to do the impossible. Moreover, most of all: “Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.” ― Oscar Wilde . |
